Emergency Preparedness for your Car

With this unpredictable winter weather that has been occurring, we wanted to remind you to have an emergency preparedness kit in your vehicle, in case you ever get stuck on the road. Recently the Coquihalla was shut down due to severe weather and hundreds of individuals were stuck. This was an important reminder that these types of occurrences can happen and you should be prepared in case this type of event occurs.

Emergency Preparedness

If you are planning to use your vehicle during this winter weather, be sure to have these items in your car kit:

• Food that won’t spoil, such as energy bars
• Water in plastic bottles
• Blanket
• Extra clothing and shoes or boots
• First aid kit with seatbelt cutter
• Small shovel, scraper and snowbrush
• Wind‑up flashlight
• Whistle
• Roadmaps

Items to keep in your trunk:

• Sand, salt or cat litter (non-clumping)
• Antifreeze and windshield washer fluid
• Tow rope
• Jumper cables
• Fire extinguisher
• Warning light or road flares

These items will help greatly in the event that you get stuck in your vehicle during inclement weather and may also prevent serious emergency from occurring. It is also important to remember to dress warmly before heading out, as running your vehicle when stuck can cause dangerous fumes to enter your vehicle. Instead of keeping the car running, keep a candle, matches and a deep can in your car, as burning a candle can provide hours of warmth if you are stuck in the cold.
