Why it is So Expensive to Replace your Car keys

There was a time when car owners who lost their keys could simply go to an automotive locksmith or the dealership and get them replaced without hassle and for next to nothing. Today, it can easily cost you $300 or more to get a new set of car keys. The newer the technology of your car and keys, the more expensive it will be to replace them.

Transponder Keys

With most modern car keys, you will pay for both the actual components and the labour for programming and coding. Most modern key fobs have a transponder chip that helps prevent theft. This chip must be programmed to match the vehicle, otherwise, you will not be able to start the car. One way to save some money is to buy a replacement from a locksmith and have them cut and program it. However, if the chip and fob are a single unit, only the dealership will be able to provide a replacement.

Smart Keys

Several auto manufacturers have switched to systems with smart keys, also known as proximity keys. With smart keys, the car’s computer detects when the keys are near and automatically unlocks the doors. The car will also detect that the key is inside the vehicle and allow you to start the engine by pressing a button. This device will also prevent you from locking your keys inside the car. Out of all the options, smart keys are the most expensive to replace.

Depending on the make and model, a local locksmith may not be able to provide a replacement for your smart key. If this is the case, you can call different dealerships for quotes as prices will vary. While there are smart keys available for purchase online, it is recommended to avoid this route as consumers have reported mixed results.

It is very important to always keep a spare set of car keys. If you only have one set, it is worth the expense to have a duplicate made. In the event you lose all your keys, it will cost you significantly more to have your car towed and labour costs can be much higher if your locks need to be re-coded.
