Last year, the Government of BC enacted new regulations targeting drivers that obstruct highway traffic by traveling in the left lane. Remember to keep these rules in mind anytime you are driving on BC highways.
Under the new regulations, drivers on multi-lane highways where the posted speed limit is 80km per hour or more must remain in the right lane unless they are:
- Passing a vehicle
- Allowing a vehicle to merge
- Preparing for a left turn
- Passing an official vehicle with a flashing light
Bus and HOV lanes are not considered to be left lanes under this legislation.
Those found to be in violation could be subject to a $167 fine and three driver penalty points.
There are exceptions to these rules depending on road conditions. Drivers are permitted to travel in the left-most lane under the following circumstances:
- At times of congestion where the speed of traffic is lower than 50km per hour
- When traffic is minimal and no cars are approaching from behind
- When it is unsafe to use the right lane
